Quinta Brunson, Sydney Sweeney & Jung Ho-yeon among 74th Emmy nominees

Today, the 74th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced at a live virtual ceremony hosted by JB Smoove and Melissa Fumero alongside Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma.

“Television continues to keep the world entertained, informed, and connected. With production at a historic high, the Academy has received a record number of Emmy submissions this season,” said Scherma. “As we prepare for the entertainment industry’s biggest night, we are thrilled to honor the innovators, creators, performers and storytellers who are propelling this platinum age of television.”

Some of the top nominated productions include Sucession with 25 nominations, Ted Lasso and The White Lotus with 20 nominations, Hacks and Only Murders in the Building following with 17 nominations, and finally, Euphoria with 16 total nominations.

2022 marks a major accomplishment for women in the TV industry, with nearly 50% of the nominated directors in the scripted directing categories being women. Additionally, about 40% of the nominees in the scripted writing categories are women. Finally, women account for 34% of the nominations for Outstanding Writing in all writing categories. In as skewed an entertainment industry as we are in, these figures are a welcome improvement and step in the right direction.

In total, there were 50 first-time performer nominees across all performer categories this season include Chadwick Boseman (What If…?), Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), Jung Ho-yeon (Squid Game), and Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria and The White Lotus). While a first timer, Sydney is also a multi-nominee alongside Quinta Brunson (performance and writing for Abbott Elementary), Zendaya (performance and music and lyrics for Euphoria), and Steve Martin (performance and writing for Only Murders in the Building).

With final-round online voting beginning on August 12, 2022, view the full list of the 74th Emmy nominations here. The award show will be broadcast live from Microsoft Theater on Monday, September 12, 2022.
